The Imitatio Christi (“The Imitation of Christ”) played a significant role in the development of Pietism. In this masterpiece of Christian devotional literature, Thomas à Kempis emphasized ethical living and the nurturing of transformative, Christ-like, inner spirituality. First published in Augsburg in the early 1470s, the exhibited German translation was also produced in the same printing center less than thirty years later. Shown is the title page featuring a woodcut of Christ carrying the cross.
