The next scene, Christ in Purgatory, also known as the Harrowing of Hell, is traditionally associated with the Saturday following Christ’s Crucifixion and entombment. Heedless of the demonic defenders of Hell, Christ breaks down its doors and releases the souls of Adam, Eve, St. John the Baptist, and others from Purgatory.
