This photograph captured the moment when president D. Frederick Wertz of Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, presented Outler an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. This was the third of thirteen honorary degrees conferred upon Albert Outler. Wertz (1916–2013) served Lycoming College from 1955 to 1968, when he was elected to the episcopacy of the United Methodist Church.
