The New Testament Adapted and Abridged, with Illustrations after Raphael

The New Testament Adapted to the Capacities of Children. To Which is Added, an Historical Account of the Lives, Actions, Travels, Sufferings, and Death[s] of the Apostles and Evangelists . . . . Adorned with Cuts; Designed by the Celebrated Raphael, and Engraved by Mr. Walker.
London: Printed for J. Newbery, 1755. (BRB0835)

This is the only edition of an early example of prolific English publisher John Newbery’s abridged scriptures intended specifically for children. The text is complemented by eight plates engraved after the Italian Renaissance painter Raphael (1483–1520). The frontispiece with three children kneeling before Jesus (on display) illustrates an extremely appropriate passage from Mark 10:14, “Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not.”
