Short Sketches from Scripture

Scripture History or Short Sketches of Characters from the Old Testament, in Prose and Verse.
London: By J.S. Hughes for J. Davis and J. Nisbet, [ca. 1821–1828]. (BRB0959)

This small work consists of fifteen highly abridged Bible stories, with each two-page chapter comprised of a sketch in prose, a short poem, and a wood-engraved illustration. In short sentences and simple poems, the sketches include the stories of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, The Flood (on display), Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David and Goliath, Ruth and Naomi, and Elijah. This copy of the text is bound with three Religious Tract Society pamphlets of the same period, also published in London, in what appears to be a publisher’s binding with spine gilt ruled and lettered “Rewards 18.”
