A small Bible Adapted and Produced for Young Readers

The Pocket Bible for Little Masters and Misses Translated from the Original Tongues and Appointed to be Read by Children.
London: Printed for F. Newbery, 1772. (BRB0798)

One of only two recorded copies, the first edition of this charming little Bible was printed with text and illustrations intended to be immediately accessible to young children. The highly abridged stories from the Old and New Testaments are written in a clear and concise style, and the twenty-three half-page woodcuts vividly depict major events in the Bible. The small size of the volume allowed it to be held with ease by the youngest of readers. The engraved frontispiece (on display) shows Adam and Eve accompanied by animals in the Garden of Eden, with the Lord above and the serpent visible in the Tree of Knowledge.
